  3.           3.6     Configuring HP LAN Manager/XL
  4.
  5.                Description
  6.
  7.                     This release of LAN Manager on the HP 3000 is for
  8.                     the Application Program Interface (API) Named
  9.                     Pipes.
  10.
  11.                     Named Pipes is a method used by appliction
  12.                     programs to talk to each other and to exchange
  13.                     data.  This exchange of data is, of course, the
  14.                     foundation on which client-server computing is
  15.                     based.  Because Named Pipes is the API of choice
  16.                     for all LAN Manager client-server implementations,
  17.                     support for it on the HP 3000 Series 9000 is very
  18.                     important.  The benefit to the customer is
  19.                     interoperability.  The benefit to an application
  20.                     developer is portability and network independence.
  21.                     With a common API, LAN Manager clients from one
  22.                     vendor will be able to talk to LAN Manager servers
  23.                     from any vendor.
  24.
  25.                Network Capacity
  26.
  27.                     The network capacity of the HP LAN Manager/XL
  28.                     product is measured by the number of concurrent
  29.                     Named Pipes sessions that can be established
  30.                     between a server and a client.  The effective
  31.                     throughput and response time will, of course, be
  32.                     dependent on the size of the system and what other
  33.                     tasks the system is expected to perform.  The
  34.                     maximum number of server sessions that can be
  35.
  36.
  37.                     established, however, is 400.  The maximum number
  38.                     of client sessions that can be established from a
  39.                     single client is 240.
  40.
